Describe your character…

He was a ton of fun to play and I remember lots of mops, wonderful wigs and very angular choreography, many a straight line that moved on stage in interesting ways.

你怎樣形容他的性格?

這個角色是充滿趣味的。我記得這齣劇有很多地拖、美妙的假髮和生硬的舞蹈編排，還有很多不同的直線在舞台上四圍移動。

Your impression of performingMatilda at the Edinburgh  Fringe Festival…

Lindsey had the piece down like clockwork. We took the show on the road, performed in Edinburgh to huge success, sold out day after day, and entertained lots of kids and families. Even Roald Dahl’s wife came to see the adaptation and loved it. Nick’s music was, as always, stellar.

I worked with a delightfully exciting group of actors.

Once the show was done we ate lunch at cafes around the Golden Mile, then booked it across town to take in as many other shows with buzz as we could before midnight. We visited little and big theatres, converted churches, halls, bars, all corners of the city, and returned late into the night, three or four shows under the belt, full from an artistic binge. For me it was pure inspiration.

The experience of performing at the Fringe in Edinburgh and seeing the theatrical bounty on offer and drinking in the vibe, gave me an aesthetic charge that hasn’t left yet. It was an exciting time.

Recently I called up Nick and asked if I could reuse his music to remount a piece we did together – also 14 years ago. He said yes, and it worked. The high school students I now teach, under the musical direction of another talented colleague, loved Nick’s zany adaptation. We mixed it with what he was building with the students. 你對於在愛丁堡演出《瑪嬌達》的印象是…

導演麥蓮茜將劇中每一個細節都編排得精巧絕倫。我們在英國愛丁堡的巡遊演出非常成功, 每日都高朋滿座, 有無數小朋友和家庭來觀賞。作者羅爾德·達爾的妻子都有來捧場, 並非常喜歡這個演繹– 當然還有原作曲家 Nick Harvey精彩的音樂。

 我與一班活力充沛的演員合作無間。每天完成演出後，我們就會到Golden Mile附近的咖啡室吃午飯, 然後在午夜前盡看盡不同的表演節目。我們參觀了不同大小的劇院、改建的教堂、禮堂、酒吧…遊遍城市每一個角落至深夜才休息。我們每天都演出三至四場表演，讓身上每一個藝術細胞都飽滿了。對我來說, 這簡直是個靈感天堂。

在愛丁堡藝穗節的演出經驗、欣賞到的精彩表演及豐富的藝術盛宴，給予我前所未有的能量。無庸置疑， 這是一段令人興奮的時期。

So what’s a description of yourself in real life?

I still remain involved in youth arts, having opened two theatres and spearheaded two theatre art programs, one in California and one in Victoria. My wife and I, and our delightful 2-year-old son, now live on the west coast of Canada.

你能形容一下現實中的你是怎樣的嗎？

我仍然活躍於青年藝術,並開辦了兩個劇場及領導兩個戲劇藝術計劃, 一個在加州, 一個在維多利亞。我、妻子和可愛的兩歲兒子現在居住加拿大西岸。

How did being in Matilda and with YAF impact your life…

When I look back at the years in Hong Kong, I am indeed thankful to YAF and all the squirrely and talented wonderfuls I met under its tent. Good friends. Good experiences. And Matilda, whatever character I played, was a ton of fun!

參與《瑪嬌達》和香港青年藝術協會的製作如何影響你的人生?

當我回首在香港生活的幾年，我很感謝香港青年藝術協會讓我結識到一班演藝人才和好友，豐富了我的演藝經驗。不管我在《瑪嬌達》中飾演哪個角色也好，這都是趣味無窮的體驗！

Describe your character…

Mr Wormwood has the looks and charm of Don Johnson in his hey day and the humor and wit of Robin Williams. Well, that’s what he likes to tell himself. I think Matilda might think differently!

你怎樣形容他的性格?

旺活先生有Don Johnson年輕時的英俊瀟灑，亦有Robin Williams般的幽默迷人！他是這樣想的形容自己的。不過我想瑪嬌達未必會同意！

What’s your experience at rehearsals so far?

I love working with Lindsey. You get the freedom to explore the character and the ability for it to develop throughout the rehearsal process. Mr Wormwood is a larger than life character and extremely fun to play. It’s always much more enjoyable playing the villain I’ve always thought.

現時的排練過程是如何的?

我很喜歡與導演麥蓮茜合作。在整個排練過程中，你可以隨意探索角色的性格和發掘角色的潛質。旺活先生是個傳奇人物，這使我飾演這個角色時充滿趣味。我素來都較喜歡飾演故事中的反角。

Any funny/interesting memory on the production so far?

It’s great working with the young actors. They bring so much energy to the rehearsals. Lindsey often gets the cast to workshop ideas and incorporates the best elements into the actual performance. When preparing a television scene involving a marriage proposal it was fun to see how the much younger cast members interpreted this romantic moment: slaps, guns and awkward hand holding seemed to feature quite predominantly!

可以分享排練中一些趣事嗎?

我很喜歡與這群年輕演員合作。在排練時，他們都精力無窮，而導演麥蓮茜亦常將他們在工作坊裹最好的構思和元素放入演出裹。他們在構思電視節目內求婚一幕時, 竟用掌摑、手槍和奇怪的手拖手來演繹—可見他們相當有趣！

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

The ability to fly. I think the Londoner in me makes me want to get from one destination to the next in the fastest possible time even if I have all the time in the world. Slow walkers drive me nuts! To fly over the heads of the amblers unhindered would be very satisfying.

如果你有一種超能力，你希望是甚麼？

飛行的能力。身為倫敦人，即使我並不趕時間，我還是想以最快速度到達目的地。慢吞吞路人會令我發瘋的！如果可以輕易飛過他們的頭，應該會很爽吧！

So what’s a description of yourself in real life?

I’m a primary teacher by day but like to sing, act and direct when I can in my free time. That’s been put on hold somewhat for the last year and a half however, due to the adoption of my five year old son. He’s certainly showing some acting potential and does not lack in the confidence department. Maybe he will be a YAFie in a few years time?

我是一位小學教師，平時喜歡唱歌、演戲和執導。不過自從領養了我的五歲兒子後，近年半都少了參與這些工作。我的兒子也有點演戲的潛質，或許數年後他也會成為一位YAFie?

How did you get involved in YAF and has that impacted your life?

This is the second performance I have worked on with YAF although I have performed in several other shows for Lindsey McAlister Productions, the first of which wasGodspell. This was my first acting opportunity as an adult and it really had a positive impact on me and made me realize what I had been missing. It opened many new doors and opportunities for which I am very grateful.

這是我第二次參與香港青年藝術協會的演出。其實我早已參與過麥蓮茜的其他製作，第一次參與是音樂劇《福音》。這是我成年後第一個演出，對我有著正面的影響，亦令我意識到我之前錯過了的經驗。這打開了更多的人生之門，使我看見更多機遇–因此我十分感恩。
